AUTO INSURANCE

DTRIC wants consumers to be informed about Hawaii’s motor vehicle law so they can make the right choices when purchasing an auto insurance policy. With DTRIC, you can rest assured that our goal is to help you design a policy that fits your specific needs while providing sufficient protection at a good value.

Hawaii’s Motor Vehicle Law
Hawaii’s motor vehicle law requires registered owners of vehicles to purchase and maintain minimum auto insurance and keep a current Motor Vehicle Insurance Identification Card in the vehicle at all times. The law also requires all drivers to operate a vehicle that is currently insured under a valid auto insurance policy.

Mandatory Auto Insurance Coverages

Coverage What it Protects Minimum Amount Required
by Hawaii Law

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) Provides medical coverage for you, anyone else in your car and any pedestrians you may injure. $10,000 each person
Bodily Injury Liability (BI) Protects you for your legal liability for injuries you’ve caused to others. $20,000 each person /$40,000 each occurrence
Property Damage Liability (PD) Protects you for your legal liability for damage you’ve caused to the property of others (their car, fence, house, etc.). $10,000 each occurrence

These are the coverages and their minimums needed to meet the requirements of Hawaii’s motor vehicle law. However, they may not be sufficient to protect you and your family if an accident should occur. Call a DTRIC representative or your agent for more information.

Hawaii’s motor vehicle law also includes optional coverages. You can choose to purchase these coverages depending on your individual situation and needs:
