Akamai Rater FAQs

Akamai Rater

  • Will the device acknowledge my Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)?

Yes, the Akamai Rater device is assigned to a specific vehicle based on its VIN.

  • Can I change my mind after I’ve signed up for Akamai Rater?

Yes, you may switch from a DTRIC Akamai Rater policy to another DTRIC auto insurance policy at any time.

  • What if I want to participate in Akamai Rater, but I don’t have access to the Internet?

In order to participate in our Akamai Rater program you must be able to provide us with a valid email address that you can check regularly for emails related to your device, installation, and Akamai Rater Dashboard. If you would like to enroll multiple vehicles in the Akamai Rater program, you will need to provide us with an email address for each vehicle. This allows us to properly track and assign a personalized DTRIC Akamai Rater Dashboard account for each vehicle on your policy.

  • Where can I review the Akamai Rater Customer Agreement?

You may review the agreement online at the DTRIC Akamai Rater Customer Agreement.

  • How will DTRIC use the data?

We will review the data collected by the Akamai Rater device to determine your Akamai Rater discount and improve our discounting program.

  • What kind of information do you collect?

Akamai Rater collects the number of miles you drive, the time of day you drive, and how often you make sudden stops, rapid accelerations, sharp turns, etc. People who drive less, in safer ways and during safer times of day could get a total discount of up to 40%. While the Akamai Rater device does come with a built-in GPS, we DO NOT use any GPS data to determine your Akamai Rater discount. The GPS and its location information are for your own information and use.

For more information, see the full DTRIC Akamai Rater Customer Agreement.

  • Can I switch the Akamai Rater device to another vehicle?

Switching the device between vehicles without prior approval is not permitted. The device and Akamai Rater discounts are assigned to a specific vehicle based on its unique Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) number at enrollment and cannot be changed without notifying DTRIC. The device is designed to send a VIN mismatch signal when moved to a different vehicle. If you wish to switch vehicles please contact DTRIC or your DTRIC independent agent.

  • Can I disable the Akamai Rater device temporarily?

You can remove the device without penalty prior to taking your vehicle to be serviced. Once you get your vehicle back, make sure to reinstall the device. • Excessive Speeding
    • Hard Braking
    • Aggressive Driving
    • Time of Day Driving
    • Akamai Rater Miles
      •  Akamai Rater Miles are based on your vehicle’s actual mileage, including adjustments based on time of day traveled.
  • Can my rate increase as a result of using Akamai Rater?

Your rate will not increase during the first year (your first annual policy term). At renewal, depending on how you drive and how much you drive your vehicle(s), you may see your auto insurance premium increase, stay the same, or decrease.

Your driving history will be reviewed prior to your renewal date to determine your Akamai Rater Grade for each vehicle. This Akamai Rater Grade determines your Akamai Rater discount for each vehicle during your next policy term. If multiple vehicles are covered by your policy, the Akamai Rater discounts may vary from vehicle to vehicle.

  • How long does it take to receive my Akamai Rater device after I sign up for the program?

It typically takes 4 to 5 business days after you agree to the Akamai Rater Customer Agreement. Your device will arrive in a box via FedEx with installation instructions. If you have multiple vehicles enrolled in Akamai Rater, you will receive a separate device shipment for each vehicle.

  • Can I enroll multiple cars in Akamai Rater?

Yes. When you enroll in DTRIC’s Akamai Rater program, you will need to install a Akamai Rater device in all vehicles covered under your auto policy.

The fee covers the cost of the wireless carrier, data transmission and data collection for your device.

  • Does it cost anything to use Akamai Rater?

The device required for the program will be provided and delivered to you at no charge. However, there is a $5 technology fee per month per vehicle.

  • Is Akamai Rater available for all vehicles?

It’s available for most vehicles made after 1996. Some vehicles don’t have the diagnostic port that the device plugs into and therefore aren’t compatible with the Akamai Rater device.
