Why Drive Aloha

Hawaii is an island state with a population of about 1.4 million. Unfortunately, the traffic fatality rate in Hawaii over the last ten years is nearly twice as high as U.S. states with the best safety record.

For example, in 2019, the traffic fatality rate in Hawaii was 7.63 per 100,000 people, as compared to 3.26 in states with the least traffic fatalities. In 2019, there were 108 traffic fatalities in Hawaii.

Hawaii also has a high rate of drunk driving crashes. In 2019, 30% of all traffic fatalities involved alcohol as compared to the 29% national average. While drunk driving fatalities were down by nearly 17% from 2018, alcohol-impaired driving remains a serious problem on Hawaii’s roads.

As a locally-founded insurance company serving our community, DTRIC has a responsibility to promote traffic safety in order to prevent senseless accidents and fatalities, and aims to do so through its Drive Aloha campaign.
