Drive Aloha Challenge FAQ

  • How does the app score my driving?

The app collects and analyzes your driving data, then provides an overall driving score out of 100 based on a series of criteria. For each of the criteria below, a specific subscore is also provided:

    • Phone Distraction – Using the phone in your hand while the vehicle is in motion

    • Hard Braking – A sudden reduction in speed

    • Speeding – Driving over a safe speed for a given road

    • Hard Acceleration – A sudden increase in speed

    • Cornering – Turning or swerving harshly

  • Why did my score go down?

There are two main reasons that your score may decrease:

    1. Change in Risky Events – An increase in risky events in recent trips leads to a lower score.
    2. Change in Driving Distance – If you drive fewer miles but have similar risky events, your risk rate per mile increases and your score may drop

  • What is the difference between the number score and the star rating?

    • Number Score – Your overall score (out of 100), shown on the Leaderboard, is based on your aggregated trip data and compared to a large user base.

    • Star Rating – These ratings are per-trip, shown on the Trips screen; stars are lost for risky events like phone use, speeding, or harsh cornering.

  • How is hard braking measured?

The app records a hard braking event when there’s a sudden reduction in speed, whether in low-speed zones or on highways. Frequent hard braking may indicate tailgating or inattention.
  • Why was I penalized for hard braking when I couldn’t avoid it?

The app can’t distinguish context—it measures the rate and duration of braking. Occasional unavoidable hard braking won’t drastically affect your score, though you may lose stars on that trip.
  • How is speeding measured?

The app flags speeding when you drive above the established “safe speed,” based on a threshold above the road’s posted speed limit.
  • How is hard acceleration measured?

Hard acceleration is recorded when you quickly increase speed—such as merging into fast-moving traffic. Rare occurrences shouldn’t affect your score, but frequent jolts will lower it.
  • How is hard cornering measured?

The app logs a hard cornering event when you take corners too sharply. To avoid it, slow down before turning.
  • How is phone use measured?

Phone distraction is detected using three factors simultaneously: phone screen on, phone in motion in your hand, and the car in motion.
  • Why was I penalized for phone use when my car was stopped?

If you pick up your phone while stationary and start driving without putting it down, the app registers it as distraction during motion. The penalty applies only while the vehicle is moving.
  • Why was I penalized for phone use when my passenger was using my phone?

The app cannot distinguish driver from passenger usage. To avoid incorrect penalties, passengers should not use the driver’s phone until the trip ends.
  • How does the app know if I am a driver or a passenger?

Over time, the app learns your behavior and common routes to estimate driver vs. passenger roles. You can manually classify trips (e.g., driver, passenger) on your first 10–15 trips to improve accuracy.
  • How does the app determine the start and end of a trip?

The app uses various phone sensors to distinguish between paused traffic and a trip’s end. If a single trip is split mistakenly into two, it doesn’t impact your score.
  • What is the gray line that appears on my trip route?

When the app takes up to a couple of minutes to detect motion at trip start, it infers and shows the prior path in gray once motion is captured.
  • Can I use the app with a new smartphone?

Yes. Use “Returning User” login and a one-time PIN sent to your registered email. The PIN is valid once and never expires.
  • Does the app use my phone data?

Yes. To operate and score your trips, it uploads ~400–500 KB per hour of driving.
  • Does the app require an internet connection?

Yes—for uploading and downloading trip data. But you can record trips and view past results offline; syncing happens once you’re online.
  • What data does the app record?

    It captures:

    • Location (GPS)

    • Accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer, barometer (if available)

    • Phone interaction during driving
It does not track which apps are used or read message/call content.

  • Does the app use my phone’s battery?

Minimal impact—only a few percent per driving hour. It’s negligible when not driving.
  • Why do I need to accept permission requests?

Permissions (like Location, Motion, Notifications, Bluetooth) are essential for the app to function correctly—e.g., trip detection and messaging connectivity.
  • Why aren’t my trips recording?

    Trip recording may fail if:

    • Phone is off

    • Battery saver mode is on

    • Location disabled

    • Sensor issues (GPS, accelerometer, gyroscope)
Solutions include charging the phone, disabling power-saving modes, enabling permissions, restarting the phone, or repairing hardware.

  • Can I pause the app?

Yes—activate Standby Mode in Settings to temporarily pause recording (e.g., during public transit or work driving).
