Helping Hands Hawaii today welcomed DTRIC Insurance Company, Limited
(DTRIC) as a Ready to Learn (R2L) Community Partner and participant in its school supply
drive through its DTRIC Cares charitable giving program. From July 1 to July 31, DTRIC Cares
will collect school supplies from DTRIC employees to support R2L, a program that helps
Hawaii’s low-income and homeless students who cannot afford to buy supplies for the school
year.

The R2L program uses school supply donations to assemble a basic educational kit that
consists of items like crayons, scissors, glue, folder paper, composition books, spiral notebooks,
pencils/pens, erasers, rulers, calculators, portfolios, 2” three-ring binders and backpacks. The
educational kits are developed for students in grades K-5 and grades 6-12. Each kit costs
approximately $10 to assemble.

“Our new partnership with DTRIC is particularly exciting because not only does it result in
additional school supplies for the children benefiting from Ready to Learn, but it reflects a
genuine interest from the company in helping this population,” said Jan M. Harada, president
and CEO of Helping Hands Hawaii. “It is always meaningful and inspiring to us when a
company’s own team joins in the effort and conducts an internal campaign as a part of their own
employee giving.”

“DTRIC Insurance is proud to join Helping Hands Hawaii in its effort to support local students
and ensure their readiness and success in school,” said Michele Saito, president of DTRIC
Insurance. “As a kamaaina company dedicated to giving back to the local community, our
DTRIC employees, friends and families look forward to participating in Helping Hands Hawaii’s
Ready to Learn program.”

In 2014, R2L supplied kits to 4,516 children during the main back-to-school period and to more
than 3,000 additional children throughout the year.

About Ready to Learn
R2L was founded in 1999 in partnership with the late U.S. Senator Daniel and Maggie Inouye.
Its purpose is to ensure that low-income and homeless students throughout Hawaii have basic
school supplies for their education. In 2005, HHH assumed statewide administration of this
initiative and has continued to perpetuate the Inouyes’ vision. Together with our community
partners, HHH assists more than 8,000 students each year.
