HONOLULU (June 14, 2018) – DTRIC Insurance, Ltd. and the Hawaii Restaurant Association (HRA) have partnered to create an online recipe book of alcohol-free cocktails, or mocktails, to provide tasty drink options for designated drivers. DTRIC and HRA will host a pau hana launch party on Tuesday, June 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Waikiki Yokocho Gourmet Alley and invite the public to sample the Mocktails, just in time for the Fourth of July holiday.
“One in three traffic fatalities nationwide is attributed to an impaired or drunk driver and in Hawaii, nearly half of all traffic deaths are caused by drivers under the influence” said Michele Saito, President and CEO of DTRIC Insurance. “Drunk driving crashes are completely avoidable and we encourage everyone to do their part to keep everyone on the roads safe. We appreciate the support of the Hawaii Restaurant Association and their members to help us prevent drunk driving incidents on July Fourth and throughout the year.”
HRA member restaurants submitted mocktail recipes for consideration and 13 were selected for the online book, including:
- BLT Market – Porch Swing
- BLT Steak – Coconut Fizz
- Hard Rock Café – Groupie Grind
- Herringbone – Lilikoi Lychee Breze
- Hula Grill Waikiki – Mauka Refresher
- Jamba Juice – Jamba After Dark

Alcohol is a major factor in traffic crashes. Based on data from the U.S. Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there was an alcohol-impaired traffic fatality every 50 minutes in 2016. According to NHTSA 10,497 people died in alcohol-impaired crashes in 2016 and alcohol-impaired crash fatalities accounted for 28 percent of all crash fatalities.
