The upcoming holiday season is a festive time with many parties and celebrations. Sadly, drunken driving deaths also increase during the holidays.
Last year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, 1,143 people were killed in drunk driving crashes nationwide. In all of 2017, 42 people were killed in Hawaii in alcohol-related traffic crashes, which is 40 percent of the total traffic fatalities for that year.
This is why DTRIC Insurance is teaming up this holiday season with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Hawaii to urge adults to plan ahead and designate a non-drinking driver.
As part of MADD’s holiday safety campaign, DTRIC Insurance is promoting “mocktail” non-alcoholic drinks meant to provide festive alternatives for designated drivers or non-drinkers and to encourage safe driving.
These drinks — like this “Melon Delight” by M.A.C. 24/7 restaurant pictured here — are created by some of Hawaii’s top restaurants. You can make and serve these delicious concoctions at your next holiday party by downloading the recipe book at our website at www.dtric.com/mocktails/.
MADD’s holiday red ribbons, which can be tied on your vehicle as a personal pledge to not drink and drive, are also free and available to the public. The red ribbons can be found statewide at Aloha Island Marts, Foodland Stores, Napa Auto Parts Hawaii and Macy’s Ala Moana store.
