Cuts & Laceration Checklist

Cuts checklist to improve safety:

Knives

  • Knives are inspected frequently for sharpness.
  • Training has been provided for all employees using knives.
  • Knives are stored in holders when not in use.
  • Cutting boards are used when cutting or slicing items.
  • Correct knives are available for specific tasks. (Carving, boning, pairing)
  • Employees have been taught to cut away from the body.

Box Cutters

  • Training has been provided on safe use of Box Cutters.
  • Box cutters are kept closed when not in use.
  • Employees are instructed to keep the free hand away from the line of cut.
  • Other sharp items are not allowed to be used in place of box cutters.

Machinery

  • Machine guards are in place, adjusted properly and used.
  • If guards are removed for maintenance, repair, or cleaning, they are replaced immediately once done.
  • Lock out/Tag out procedures have been established when any adjustments, repair, or cleaning takes place.

PPE

  • Cut protection gloves provided.
  • Knife blade protection used when transferring.
