Prepare Your Car For The New Year

The start of the new year is also a good time to make sure your personal car and related insurance coverage is in order and to prepare your car for the new year. Here are some helpful tips:

Make sure you have adequate car insurance coverage

Evaluate your auto insurance policy. Ask yourself whether your car insurance coverage is adequate to protect you financially in the event of an accident resulting in vehicle damage, medical-related costs, as well as protecting your other personal property from liability.

Purchasing minimal coverage may impact your personal assets should you be found at fault for an accident. Below are types of coverage to protect you financially:

  • Liability: Liability coverage comes in two forms: bodily injury and property damage liability. These cover damage to others and their property. It doesn’t cover the driver or passengers.
  • Personal Injury Protection: This type of coverage will cover medical expenses related to driver and passenger injuries.
  • Uninsured or Underinsured Motorist: This covers you in the event that the person who hits your car does not have enough insurance to cover the damage — or any coverage at all.

Perform consistent car maintenance

Regular and proper maintenance of your vehicle (e.g. oil changes, tune-ups, tire pressure checks) can help extend the life of your car. Vehicle checkups can help prevent major and costly repairs and are always important to include when you prepare your car for the new year. Take your car to your dealer or a mechanic for inspections to look for hidden problems that can become worse over time. Doing so can also help prevent mechanical breakdowns, which can become a safety hazard if your car is stuck along the side of the road with passing traffic and at night when visibility is poor.

Have a roadside emergency kit

In the event your vehicle does become stuck on the side of the road, it’s best to be prepared for these emergency situations. Take the time to purchase a pre-assembled roadside emergency kit or purchase separate items to create a homemade kit.

Also, make sure your insurance policy card is updated in the event of an accident or a police stop!
